ABOUT US

We have been investigating the myths, history and reputed sites of Frome’s secret tunnels for a few years now. Having all lived in Frome for some time, like many others we had heard the local folklore about secret tunnels supposedly criss-crossing the town, but not seen them.

Then one of our team discovered what they thought was a tunnel whilst renovating their cellar. Initial enquiries at the Museum and other such places, turned up nothing except a little ridicule. Some stories had been reported in the local press a few times, but with little evidence.

So we formed a little group of friends with the idea of investigating the stories in a more systematic fashion. We have approached the task in three ways:

  • Collecting the many local stories about the tunnels
  • Investigating and occasionally digging at specific sites
  • Mapping and research into local historical records and facts

Many of the stories we learn about the tunnels are from the older generation in the town. Some have come from the other side of the world, where individuals contact us to relay stories that their Frome years and a possible site for us to investigate. To date, we have spoken to about 100 people with anecdotes, stories or first hand accounts. Of these so far, about 30% have been people telling us their very convincing personal stories of playing in or getting into the tunnels. The more we hear the more we realise that many of these stories correlate with actual events, places or historic buildings in the town – and that not everyone we talk to can be making these stories up!

We are a friendly, amateur group and as we have jobs, families and busy lives, progress is variable – depending upon other commitments, the weather and available help when digging a site.

If you think you can help us with research, site digging or anything else – then please get in contact, (see contact page for details).
